We welcome all comers who want to help the community and are comfortable with outreach work that is premised on love, connection and community without any stigma, judgment or moral dogma.
Welcome, Welcome!
New volunteer orientation and on-boarding spots are available on a a rolling ongoing basis but space each night is limited according to team-lead coverage so sign up for and reserve your spot link at the end of the registration form mentioned above) or by prior arrangement with an SSOS coordinator, and are held once weekly on alternating Wednesday & Friday evenings at 845PM.
During orientation we introduce you to the organization, how we operate, and the nature of our relationship with the community. We give you an overview of our protocols, policies, and ground rules, and answer any questions or concerns you may have.
Although you won’t be expected to directly step into any critical patient care situations during your first few patrols, (every team always has at least two experienced medics who are responsible for provision of care should your team encounter an overdose or medical emergency during your first few patrols) all new volunteers receive as part of their orientation a comprehensive but high level overview of the principles, considerations and steps involved in overdose evaluation, mitigation and response, incorporating nalaxone training, basic life support principles, as well as our SSOS specific protocols, best practices and observed practical real world nuances and pro-tips in applying the above which should offer even licensed and experienced paramedics something new to consider, while leaving even the most uninitiated layperson with a new confidence as to when, and how to respond should they encounter someone whom they suspect may be overdosing , as well as to the legal protections under the good samaritan’s act that protect them in doing so, and several guiding principles and key considerations in differentiating opiod overdoses from other situations.
With prep and orientations completing at about the same time the cohort is split-up into teams of of 4-5 volunteers, balancing medics to outreach, gender, age and experience with the community … we hit the streets until late. At the end of the night we regroup at the office, put everything away and spend about 10-15 minutes debriefing or completing patient care reports as necessary. By the time we’re done it’s typically around 1230-1245 (although we can accommodate early departures if were given prior notice).
After your orientation and first patrol night, you will be added to our group chat which we use to coordinate our operations, and your account on better impact will change from prospective volunteer to active volunteer unlocking your access to sign up for all future patrols and events with which we are engaged.
If this sounds like something that you’re interested in. Please click above and set the wheels in motion. We look forward to meeting you, and until then any other questions or concerns, or any rescheduling or cancellations for orientation spots can be directed by email to info@streetsaviours.com or by phone or SMS / text message to (236) 833-4233.
